Mammography Continuing Ed Requirements

Neither the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) have any specific requirements for mammographers to achieve continuing education hours specific to mammography. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires mammographers to achieve 15 hours of continuing education directly related to mammography within a 3 year period. The 3 year period coincides with the hospital or clinic's FDA Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) inspection. All 15 credit hours must be specifically related to mammography or to the breast.

MRI and ultrasound courses are accepted if they pertain specifically to mammography or to the breast. If a mammographer is working in a facility that uses digital mammography, 6 of the 15 credit hours must be specific to digital imaging of the breast. All mammographers must perform a minimum of 200 mammograms within each 2 year period.

Specific questions about MQSA requirements can be directed to 1-800-838-7715 or their web site at http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/mammography.

You may also use the following FDA link for questions about MQSA Accreditation, Certification, Inspections, Policy, Guidance, and other mammography related concerns: Mammography Facility Hotline 1-800-838-7715 or FAX your comments to 1-410-290-6351, or Email MQSAhotline@SSSI.net

In addition, each state may have its own requirements for mammography specific continuing education courses for mammographers. Contact your state radiology board for state licensing questions. We have provided a list of all state radiology boards.
